I think I'll have to start on one of those "linux on Dell Inspiron" pages, to document how to get stuff working.
So far I've managed to get kernel 2.6.11.10 running, with X working, wireless networking with the ipw2200 (even for kismet use), sound, and compiled MPlayer (though the tivo support is broken).
I'll go through and document each of these things at some point.
I'm going to have to do it all over again I think, since I partitioned the disk too small, the 3gb /usr partition is constantly full, and I filled up /home last night, while trying to compile MPlayer.

Simon, I'm probably going to buy a inspiron 2200, so I'm wondering, you could make work everything with linux?
cheers,

So far I've got everything sort of working:
kernel 2.6.11.10
audio, fine, alsa support
wireless, using intel ipw2200 drivers, including kismet support
usb, fine, runs memory drives, ipod
dvdrw, should work, haven't tried burning though
ethernet, fine
modem, should work, untested
acpi/apm, fine
video isn't great though.. I'm still trying to get the proper driver working, for dri/drm support, to run at full speed, it's currently only running in vesa mode, but this is fast enough to watch videos/dvds.
